International media reports show that many experts believe that Beijing and Delhi’s decision to continue importing oil from Russia and Iran has two basic reasons; first, economic interests and energy security, and second, independent foreign policy and energy sovereignty.
In this way, India and China are heavily dependent on cheap energy. Russia and Iran sell oil to these countries at significant discounts, which helps stabilize domestic prices and predictability of fuel supply. India has long-term contracts with Russia and cannot stop its purchases overnight, and China will face a severe energy shortage without Russian and Iranian oil.
Regarding the second reason, namely independent foreign policy and energy sovereignty, experts believe that both China and India are determined to advance their energy policies independently of external pressure. The Chinese government has repeatedly stated that US pressure will not work, and some analysts believe that it may even use this issue to gain concessions in trade negotiations.
