The start of drilling operations in South Pars gas field

The start of drilling operations in South Pars gas field
Last year, the CEO of National Oil Company announced the handing over of the drilling of 35 wells in the South Pars gas field to domestic contractors.

According to Energy Press, in November of last year, Khojste Mehr, the CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, announced that the drilling of 35 wells in the South Pars gas field had been handed over to domestic contractors. A contract worth 1.2 billion dollars is keyed with the aim of increasing productivity and maintaining gas production, and now, after doing the preliminary work and equipping the platforms, the drilling operation will begin soon.

Khojaste Mehr, deputy minister of oil, believes that handing over this huge project to domestic contractors will, on the one hand, help the development of the gas industry, maintain production and economic growth of the country, and on the other hand, it will create employment and improve domestic capabilities.

The drilling of 35 in-field wells in the South Pars common field was assigned to four Iranian drilling, exploration and production companies in the form of four contracts, which should be carried out in a period of about three years under the supervision of Pars Oil and Gas Company as the employer.

These 35 wells are in four work packages with POSCO companies (first package with eight wells), Petroiran Development (second package with 9 wells), Shamal Drilling (third package with 9 wells) and Pasargad Energy Development Group (fourth package with 9 wells) has been signed. With the implementation of this project and the complete drilling of 35 in-field wells, the capacity of gas production from the South Pars joint field will be increased, which will significantly contribute to reducing the country’s gas imbalance.

75% of gas consumed in the country is supplied from South Pars

The South Pars common field, which is located in the Persian Gulf and the border between Iran and Qatar, is the largest gas field in the world. The total gas reserves of this field are 39 trillion cubic meters and its gas condensate reserves are 56 billion barrels. Of this amount, Iran’s share in its gas sector is estimated at 14 trillion cubic meters and in gas condensate at 18 billion barrels, which is equivalent to 8% of the world’s gas.
