The development of the Kish gas field has finally taken off; is Touraj Dehghani or Persian Gulf Holding involved?
After a long period of stagnation and uncertainty over the fate of the Kish gas field development plan, new news is now reporting progress in drilling in the field and the completion of the ninth well; an event that coincides with rumors of the field being transferred to Persian Gulf Holding and has also raised speculation about the role of Touraj Dehghani, CEO of Pars Oil and Gas. Is the Kish gas field on the verge of a high-profile transfer to the petrochemical sector?

According to Energy Press, while the Kish gas field is considered one of the country’s strategic capacities to compensate for the gas imbalance, news of the completion of the ninth well of this field was released yesterday.
This new progress in the first phase of development has occurred while there have been whispers about changing the project executor and handing over the Kish field to the petrochemical sector for a long time.
Is the Kish gas field on the path to development or handover?
According to rumors, studies are underway to hand over this field to the Persian Gulf Holding; a holding that had previously announced its readiness to enter the upstream industry. Although this handover has not yet been finalized, there are signs that could indicate a change in the Ministry of Oil’s approach to interacting with the private sector. Changes that may have gained more momentum with the arrival of Touraj Dehghani, the new CEO of Pars Oil and Gas Company.
A recent report by Pars Oil and Gas Company reports the completion of the ninth well of the first phase of this field; A capacity equivalent to 18 million cubic meters of gas per day, which covers about 65 percent of the final production of this phase.
Will Paknejad’s promise to complete Phase 1 be fulfilled?
This is despite the fact that last year, the promise to fully complete the first phase was raised by Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad in the parliament to obtain a vote of confidence from the representatives. Although there is still a long way to go before full commissioning, the recent progress towards breaking the 16-year spell can be considered an important step towards commissioning this field.
With 40 trillion cubic feet of in-situ gas reserves, the Kish gas field is known as the 17th largest gas reservoir in the world. If its development is carried out in full, it will have a production capacity equivalent to three phases of South Pars; a vital capacity to reduce the country’s dependence on gas imports or swaps, and of course, a new opportunity for the non-governmental sector to participate in large energy projects.
It remains to be seen whether the recent technical advances in the Kish gas field are a sign of a more serious return of Pars Oil and Gas Company to the development track, or will we soon witness a change in ownership and management of the project? In any case, what is certain is that this field is now under the microscope of decision-makers and oil industry activists more than ever.
