South Pars Gas Complex’s Efforts to Reduce Gas Flaring to Below 5 Million Cubic Meters

According to Energy Press, citing the Pars Special Zone Organization, Sekhavat Asadi, in a meeting with members of the Special Commission for Production Surge and Supervision of General Policies of Article 44 of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, stated that the Pars Special Economic Zone, with an area of 54,000 hectares, is the largest special economic zone in the country. He stated: This zone is active in two points: Pars 1 (Asalouyeh) and Pars 2 (Kangan), and the development of the Golshan, Farzad and Ferdows fields in Pars 3 (North Pars) has not yet begun.
Stating that in Pars 1, eight refineries and 22 petrochemical plants are in production, he added: In Pars 2, five refineries are also operating, 12 petrochemical plants are under construction, and one petrochemical plant is in production.
The CEO of the Pars Special Zone Organization announced the area of the South Pars gas field as about 9,700 square kilometers and stated: One-third of this field is towards our country and about 6,000 square meters is also towards Qatar, and we are currently ahead of Qatar in terms of extraction.
Stating that the South Pars gas field holds 8 percent of the world’s gas reserves and 50 percent of Iran’s gas reserves, Asadi said: “Currently, 70 percent of the country’s gas production comes from this region, and our colleagues were able to record a record of 716 million cubic meters of gas from all South Pars platforms in the past few days.” He announced the daily production of more than 710,000 barrels of gas condensate in South Pars, adding: “Of this amount, 450,000 barrels are transferred daily to the Persian Gulf Star Refinery in Bandar Abbas through a 480-kilometer pipeline for gasoline production.” Gas condensate exports to be suspended for the next 2 years. Stating that in 2017, our country’s production became equal to that of Qatar, the CEO of the Pars Special Zone Organization added: “Before 2017, our extraction from South Pars was less than that of Qatar, but after this year, it has moved away from its neighbor and now our daily production has surpassed that of Qatar, but because they started work earlier than us, their cumulative extraction from our country is greater.” Assadi stated that the total investments of the National Oil Company in the upstream part of South Pars, both offshore and onshore, are around $90 billion. He stated that an investment of around $5.6 billion is currently required to construct a phase of South Pars. He added: “Before the sanctions, domestic companies started the work with a 30% partnership with foreigners, but now around 70% of the equipment in Phase 14 is domestic.” Stating that within 110 kilometers of the Persian Gulf, we have 39 platforms and 360 wells, with every 11 well being directed to a platform, he said: “The extracted gas is transported to land by 3,200 kilometers of transmission lines, and the sweetening process is carried out in refineries.”
