Iraq: Exemption from buying Iranian gas not yet expired

The Iraqi Prime Minister's advisor announced that the United States has maintained an exemption from sanctions on Baghdad's purchase of Iranian gas.
According to Energy Press, according to Reuters, Farhad Alaeddin, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor, told a local Iraqi television channel: “The exemption guaranteed by the United States for the import of Iranian gas has not been canceled and is still in effect.” He added: “Most of Iraq’s power plants operate with Iranian gas and 43 percent of Iraq’s electricity is generated with gas imported from our neighboring country.” The Iraqi Prime Minister’s Advisor continued: “However, the United States encourages Iraq to obtain gas from other sources.” The agreement to extend Iran’s gas exports to Iraq for five years was signed in Baghdad on April 27, 2024.
