Iran on the verge of being eliminated from the world energy market; will gas exports to Türkiye stop?

According to Energy Press, Iran, once a major player in the region’s energy market, is now gradually losing its position. A clear sign of this trend is the country’s declining ability to maintain gas export markets to neighbors such as Iraq and Turkey; countries that were once highly dependent on Iranian gas but have now found a variety of alternative options by developing their infrastructure and attracting new partners. One of Iran’s most important export contracts is the annual sale of 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey, which expires in mid-2026. This contract has brought Iran about $3 billion in annual revenue in recent years. However, Turkey seems unwilling to extend it in the long term; An issue that, if realized, could affect the energy balance and even Iran’s political balance in the region. Analysts believe that the reduction of Turkey’s and Iraq’s energy dependence on Iranian gas, especially in recent years, has been one of the factors weakening stable relations and constructive interactions between Iran and these two countries. In a situation where US political pressures have also cast a shadow on Türkiye’s energy decisions, Ankara is seriously pursuing the path of diversifying its energy sources.
