Iran becomes OPEC’s second largest refiner
With a refining capacity of 2 million 237 thousand barrels per day and a 16% share in OPEC, Iran ranks second among the countries of this organization, and it also accounts for 2.1% of the world's refining capacity.

According to Energy Press, the Secretariat of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries published its 60th annual statistical bulletin for 2025 last week. One of the issues mentioned in this bulletin is the refining capacity of OPEC member countries in the past year (2024). According to this report, the refining capacity of OPEC member countries in 2024 was a total of 14 million and 139 thousand barrels per day, and the total refining capacity of the world last year was 103 million and 769 thousand barrels per day.
These figures show that OPEC had about 13.6 percent of the world’s refining capacity in 2024. The world’s refining capacity has grown by one percent compared to the previous year, and OPEC’s refining capacity has increased by half a percent.
Among OPEC members, however, Saudi Arabia has the largest refining capacity, with a capacity of 3 million and 291 thousand barrels per day, more than 23 percent of OPEC’s capacity. After Saudi Arabia, Iran is in second place with a refining capacity of 2 million 237 thousand barrels per day and a share of about 16%, and it also accounts for 2.1% of the world’s refining capacity.
