Introduction to Tabriz Refinery; the refining hub of northwest Iran

According to Energy Press, the Tabriz Oil Refinery was designed in 1974 and commissioned in February 1977 with an initial capacity of 80,000 barrels per day. With the efforts of domestic experts, the production capacity of this refinery increased to 110,000 barrels per day in 1992. This complex currently accounts for about seven percent of the country’s refining capacity by converting crude oil into main and special products and supplies the liquid fuel needed by East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Zanjan and Kurdistan provinces. Parsian Oil and Gas Development Group, with a 49 percent stake, is the main shareholder of this refinery.
History and commissioning
The design and construction of the Tabriz Refinery began in 1974 by the Italian company Osnam Projecti and was commissioned in 1977 southwest of Tabriz. The increase in production capacity to 110,000 barrels per day in 1992 was the result of the efforts of domestic experts, which indicates the country’s technical and engineering capabilities. This refinery, with 14 refining units and 10 ancillary service units, is considered one of the most equipped refining centers in Iran.
