Increasing gas supply to power plants during cold days this year

According to Energy Press, the cold days of this year in Iran began much faster than in previous years with the arrival of the Scandinavian cold mass in November; the cold and precipitation that were unprecedented in the first week of November compared to the past five years. Therefore, 11 northern provinces of the country simultaneously faced an increase in cold weather. This increase in cold caused the temperature to decrease by an average of 12 degrees, so that the volume of gas consumption in the first four days of November this year increased by 55 percent compared to the same period last year.
The cold weather was also stable in the months of December, January and February, and the coldest week of the year began in the country on February 20, when the temperature decreased following snowfall and rain in all parts of the country, and the spread of cold reached its peak in 21 provinces of the country. However, with planning, round-the-clock efforts, and full readiness of the oil industry to produce raw gas and process it upstream and transfer sweet gas downstream, the gas supply network was maintained stably and heat was maintained in homes, except for short-term outages that occurred due to technical problems, but were quickly resolved.
At the same time, in addition to maintaining production and network stability, and despite the annual increase in the country’s gas subscribers and consumption growth, seven consecutive records were recorded in sweet gas production during these cold days, the latest record of 880 million cubic meters of gas was on 13 Bahman. Also, the average sweet gas delivery to the network was 850 million cubic meters in Azar, 863 million cubic meters in Di, and 871 million cubic meters in the first 20 days of Bahman.
Record-breaking gas consumption in the domestic sector
Since the country’s priority during the cold days of the year is to supply gas to the domestic sector, on some days up to 78 percent of the sweet gas delivered to the network is allocated to the domestic, commercial, and small industries sectors; The highest gas consumption record this year in this sector was also broken on February 12 with 681 million cubic meters. In addition to supplying gas to the domestic sector, the Ministry of Oil has made every effort to meet the gas needs of other sectors, including power plants, which have the important task of supplying the country’s electricity needs; official statistics from the Ministry of Oil show that gas deliveries to the country’s power plants in the months of December, January and February of this year have increased compared to the same periods in 1401 and 1402.
