harvesting more than 51% of Iran’s oil reserves; The necessity of acceleration in the development of increased technologies
The Director of Research and Technology of the National Iranian Oil Company, announcing that more than 51% of the country's recoverable oil reserves have been harvested, emphasized: the countries of the region have moved with increasing speed towards the use of new technologies for increased harvesting, and Iran is bound to accelerate the development and localization of these technologies in order to protect the remaining reserves and sustainable production.

According to Energy Press, Seyyed Mahdia Motahari said today (Monday, January 8th) at the conference on improving and increasing production in oil and gas fields: until 1404, Iran harvested about 51% of its recoverable oil reserves and 49% of these reserves still remain. This is despite the fact that in some areas, especially the oil-rich areas of the south, the amount of tank emptying has been much higher, and this difference is due to the nature and extent of the tanks, including the presence of focal tanks with high reserves.
He stated that the countries of the region, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman, have moved towards the implementation of increased extraction technologies with a significant speed, he said: The UAE is known as the pilot of increased extraction methods in the Middle East, Iraq has started pilot projects of increased extraction in the Azadegan joint field, and Saudi Arabia widely uses hydraulic fracturing in conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
$2.1 billion hydraulic fracturing market in the Middle East
Referring to the economic dimensions of this trend, the Director of Research and Technology of National Iranian Oil Company stated: The market for hydraulic fracturing services in the Middle East is estimated at 2.1 billion dollars in 2024 and is expected to increase in the next 10 years with an annual growth rate of 8.6 percent. This growth is the result of regional countries’ focus on increasing the rate of recycling and faster extraction of remaining oil, and in the meantime, Saudi Arabia is considered the leading country in the region in technological investment.
Motahari considered the first challenge in the way of applying technology to be the wrong definition of the issues and said: In many cases, the issues are seen from only one perspective, while the methods of increased harvesting require a comprehensive and integrated view of reservoir-oriented, well-oriented and facility-oriented.
He added: In reservoirs like Bangestani reservoirs, accelerating production without pressure support leads to rapid pressure drop. Adopting phased strategies and using methods such as water injection for pressure support can ensure stable and increased production, even if the initial investment cost is not high.
