Get to know one of the most modern refineries in Iran, Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery
Bandar Abbas Oil Refining Company, as one of the 10 largest refineries in the country, plays a key role in providing Iran with the energy and products it needs. The refinery was built on an area of about 770 hectares, 20 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas city and on the northern shore of the Persian Gulf, and went into operation in 1997 with an initial capacity of 232,000 barrels per day.

According to Energy Press, relying on the capabilities of domestic experts, the nominal capacity of this refinery increased to 320,000 barrels per day in 2008, and in 2012 and 2013, by implementing optimization projects without spending heavy capital costs, its production capacity reached 350,000 barrels per day; a capacity with which it still operates today. Currently, about 18 percent of the country’s total crude oil refining process is carried out in this complex.
Quality Development and Improvement Projects
In order to improve the quality of products and achieve new environmental standards, the National Plan to Increase Capacity and Improve the Quality of Gasoline and Oil and Gas was put into operation in 2018. With the implementation of this plan, the quality of gasoline produced was upgraded to the Euro 5 standard and oil and gas to Euro 4, which is an important step in reducing pollutants and making the country self-sufficient in producing high-quality products.

Feed and Energy Supply
The main feedstock for the refinery is heavy crude oil stored on Kharg Island, which is transported to the refinery by 90,000-ton tankers. Also, about 21,000 barrels of crude oil are supplied daily from the joint Iranian-Oman field on Hengam Island, and part of the gas condensates are supplied from the Sarkhun, Assaluyeh and Parsian gas refineries.
The natural gas required by the refinery is also provided from the seventh national pipeline and gas resources in the Sarkhun region and Qeshm Island at an average rate of 90,000 normal cubic meters per hour. The refinery’s water consumption is also supplied from the Persian Gulf through three 56-inch pipelines at a rate of 30,000 cubic meters per hour.

Competitive Features and Advantages
Bandar Abbas Oil Refinery is the most modern and the only refinery in Iran and the Middle East that has the ability to refine heavy and extra-heavy crude oil. This complex has the largest gasoline production unit in the country with the continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) method and also the largest viscosity reduction unit in terms of feed. The percentage of feed conversion to motor gasoline in this refinery is higher than other domestic refineries, and in addition, energy consumption management and thermal recovery are implemented significantly to minimize fuel consumption. The presence of a dedicated pier for receiving crude oil and exporting products, precise control of water, soil and air pollutants based on national and international standards, and full operation by Iranian contractors are other prominent features of this refinery that have distinguished its position compared to other refining units in the country.
