Get to know Fajr Energy, the beating heart of Mahshahr petrochemicals
Fajr Energy Persian Gulf Company (formerly Fajr Petrochemical) was established in the 1970s with the aim of providing utilities to companies in the Special Economic Zone in Bandar Imam Khomeini and became the first centralized utility company in the country. The company plays an important role in transmitting electricity, water, liquid oxygen, and steam to its neighboring petrochemical companies.

According to Energy Press, utility units in a refinery or industrial complex are critical parts that are responsible for providing energy, raw materials, and support services necessary for the main production processes. These units include electricity generation, steam, water treatment, and other essential services without which production processes cannot continue smoothly and sustainably. One of these units, located in Bandar Imam, is Fajr Energy Persian Gulf Company.
History of Fajr Energy Persian Gulf Company
Fajr Energy Persian Gulf Company was established in Bandar Imam Khomeini in 1998 to meet the utility needs of the petrochemical special economic zone. As the country’s first centralized utility complex, the company began operating in 2002. With the expansion of new projects in Sites 2 and 3, the Fajr Energy expansion plan was implemented in Site 2 to increase production capacity.
In 2009, the ownership of the company was transferred to Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries, and in 2015, a portion of its shares were listed on the stock exchange. The company operates on a 70-hectare land area, including 30 hectares in Zone 1 and 40 hectares in Zone 2.

Fajr Energy power plants are the heart of the region’s electricity and steam production. These power plants produce 1,147 megawatts of electricity per hour with 11 gas turbines. Their main fuel is natural gas, with diesel fuel used as a backup fuel. The first turbine in Zone 1 was commissioned in 1999 in collaboration with ALSTOM and domestic companies. The other turbines were installed in 2006 and 2007 in collaboration with GENERAL ELECTRIC and MAPNA. These power plants, producing 1,690 tons of steam per hour, utilize the turbine exhaust gases to produce steam with a thermal efficiency of more than 90 percent. The dispatching unit also distributes the generated electricity through 132 and 400 kV substations and is connected to the national grid.
