Fuel smuggling wastes $8 billion of the country’s resources annually

The advisor to the CEO of the National Iranian Petroleum Refining and Distribution Company reported that $6 to $8 billion of the country's resources are wasted annually due to fuel smuggling, saying: "We must have a national perspective in fuel allocation, while the relevant agencies have a sectoral perspective."
According to Energy Press, citing the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Seyyed stated on Sunday (June 1) on the Khabar Network’s “Economics Table” program: “Many factors contribute to fuel smuggling, the most important of which are the significant price difference with neighboring countries and the lack of supervision over the performance of various consumption sectors, including transportation, power plants, agriculture, and industry.” Stating that $6 to $8 billion of the country’s resources are wasted annually due to smuggling, he added: “As long as the allocation layer is faced with formal transport documents, we face challenges in allocating fuel subsidies to real consumers.”
