A harsh winter is coming; warning about gas consumption
While this fall has been marked by unprecedented rainfall and reduced hydroelectric power plant reserves in many northern provinces, estimates indicate a 4 to 6 degree drop in temperature starting next week; a situation that could be a warning for the gas network.

According to Energy Press, natural gas consumption in the domestic, commercial and small industries sector reached about 2 billion 726 million cubic meters last week with the decrease in temperature, and the highest daily consumption was recorded on Wednesday at 401 million cubic meters. In the same period, power plants were next with about 1 billion 319 million cubic meters and major industries with more than 1 billion 189 million cubic meters.
The average daily gas consumption this week shows that the domestic and commercial sector consumed more than 389 million cubic meters, power plants about 188 million cubic meters and major industries about 170 million cubic meters of gas. The consumption trend indicates an increase in gas demand in the domestic and commercial sector at the same time as the weather gets colder and the power plants’ demand gradually decreases.
This is while not even a millimeter of rainfall has been recorded in some northern regions, and these conditions, in addition to reducing the capacity of hydroelectric power plants, increase the possibility of gas consumption growth in cold and dry regions. Accordingly, provincial gas companies have already been put on alert.
In such circumstances, according to Saeed Tavakoli, CEO of the National Gas Company, the National Gas Dispatching Room makes decisions on pressure regulation and restrictions based on daily data, and coordination between provinces is considered the main condition for maintaining network balance. At the same time, smart consumption monitoring and dealing with possible meter reading violations are on the agenda, and preventing gas waste at CNG stations is pursued with greater sensitivity; in such a way that any violation will be pursued without leniency.
According to him, the provinces have also been required to provide network monitoring data to the Dispatching Center to enable accurate analysis and smart decision-making.
Despite repairs in some phases of South Pars, the gas production situation has been described as “desirable” and alternative lines, including the ninth nationwide line, have played an effective role in network stability. At the same time, it was announced that the power plant fuel tanks are in good condition and for the first time, the country’s liquid fuel reserves have reached their maximum level. As announced, the increase in gas deliveries to power plants has also set a new record, and this year more than 3 billion and 150 million cubic meters of gas have been sent to power plants than last year.
