Increased delivery of Euro 4 fuel to power plants; Ministry of Oil moves to reduce emissions
The 14th government's Ministry of Oil has taken a major leap forward in reducing pollution and improving air quality in metropolitan areas through a series of coordinated measures, including an unprecedented increase in the production and delivery of Euro 4 oil and gas to power plants, the full supply of standard fuel in Tehran, the production of low-sulfur furnace oil, and the acceleration of the plan to develop dual-fuel vehicles.

According to Energy Press, the Ministry of Petroleum of the 14th government, with a special focus on improving fuel quality, is pursuing an increase in the production of Euro 4 and 5 oil and gas as one of the main axes of its programs. By implementing quality improvement projects and increasing the share of clean fuel in the product portfolio, the ministry is trying to achieve complete standardization of distributed fuel in the country. The overarching goal of this approach is to significantly reduce pollutants in the transportation sector, improve air quality in metropolitan areas, and move towards global standards; an approach that shows that the 14th government considers the production and distribution of standard fuel not a temporary measure, but a strategic necessity for the health of society and the environment.
According to statistics provided by the National Iranian Petroleum Distribution Company, since the beginning of this year, about 310 million liters of oil and gas have been delivered to the Damavand power plant, of which 300 million liters (equivalent to about 97 percent) were Euro 4 oil and gas. Also, the amount of oil and gas received by the Parand power plant since the beginning of this year has been 57 million liters, of which 31 million liters (more than 53 percent) are Euro 4 oil and gas. This is while the amount of Euro 4 oil and gas delivered to the Parand and Damavand power plants in the same period last year was zero and 49 million liters, respectively. Therefore, the amount of Euro 4 oil and gas delivered to the Parand and Damavand power plants has increased by 100 percent and 512 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year. This increase in the delivery of fuel with power plant quality exceeds the commitments of the National Iranian Petroleum Distribution Company and has a significant impact on preventing environmental pollution.
According to the agreements made between the National Petroleum Products Distribution Company and the Environment Organization, it was stipulated that half of the fuel for Damavand and Parand power plants would meet the Euro 4 standard, but this share has now reached 85 percent; a figure that has increased by 8 percent compared to the same period last year, which indicates seriousness in implementing environmental policies and reducing air pollution in the capital.
Within this framework, for the first time, 420 million liters of low-sulfur furnace oil with a sulfur content of 0.5 percent by weight was produced and distributed among major consumer power plants. This measure is another important step in the field of producing clean fuel and improving environmental standards and indicates the refining industry’s focus on environmental quality and health. Also, according to the National Petroleum Products Distribution Company of Iran, all fuel distributed at stations in Tehran also meets the Euro 4 standard and its sulfur content is less than 50 ppm.
