Foreign exchange savings of one billion dollars following the elimination of the need to import diesel
Mohammad Sadeq Azimifar said at the first conference on combating fuel smuggling: "With the measures taken, 600,000 illegal fuel cards were collected. Also, the average consumption of petroleum gas (gasoline) was reduced by 4 million liters; a reduction that creates savings for the country equivalent to one billion dollars in one year."

According to Energy Press, Mohammad Sadeq Azimifar, Deputy Minister and CEO of the National Petroleum Refining and Distribution Company, said: “The main root of fuel smuggling is in the consumption sector. In his opinion, the lack of a precise consumption pattern and weakness in monitoring and transparency in this sector have caused a significant portion of the country’s fuel to be diverted towards smuggling.” He emphasized: “The next step is to use efficient tools and methods; the same issue that was also emphasized in the conference slogan and focuses on the use of intelligence and databases.” Azimifar believes that if data-driven governance and intelligence are established in the supply chain, production and distribution of petroleum products, especially in the consumption sector, it will be possible to identify and control the majority of existing leaks. According to him, a clear example of this approach is the joint action of Farajah and the National Petroleum Refining and Distribution Company in the past year, which was carried out by intersecting data from the smart fuel system, roadside cameras and Farajah’s database. The result of this action has been the identification and counteraction of a large volume of fraudulent bills of lading and production licenses in the transportation sector, as well as the identification and cancellation of approximately 600,000 unauthorized fuel cards.
