Fajr Jam Refinery, 40 years old, a pioneer in optimizing and reducing energy consumption

Fajr Jam Refinery, 40 years old, a pioneer in optimizing and reducing energy consumption
The Operations Manager of Fajr Jam Gas Refining Company announced continuous improvement programs and optimization plans in production processes, saying: "Despite the refinery being nearly 40 years old, implementing continuous measures, in addition to reducing energy consumption, increases the refinery's productivity."

According to Energy Press, the Fajr Jam Gas Refinery is one of the oldest and most important units in Iran’s gas industry, which has played a significant role in supplying the country’s energy feedstock and producing gas by-products for about four decades. The refinery, which was built with the aim of receiving feedstock from the Nar and Kangan gas fields, has also been receiving part of its feedstock from the huge South Pars field since the 1990s and has been able to make an important contribution to meeting the country’s domestic and export needs. The importance of this unit is not limited to production volume, but its performance in optimizing energy consumption, improving productivity, and complying with environmental standards has made it one of the successful models of the gas refining industry. In addition, the refinery’s management and specialized engineering and operation teams have been able to reduce energy consumption and improve overall productivity through continuous planning and implementation of optimization projects. The corrective measures include reviewing processes, implementing projects to reduce chemical and steam consumption, and upgrading infrastructure systems, including replacing old water and fire lines, which has reduced resource waste and increased safety at the site. Hamid El-Verdi, Operations Manager of Fajr Jam Gas Refining Company, told Shana about the measures taken to optimize energy consumption in the refinery’s production processes: “Given the refinery’s 40-year history, it is natural that some of the equipment and processes have older technologies than newer units, and as a result, energy consumption is higher in some areas. However, colleagues in the engineering, development, and operations units continuously review, approve, and implement corrective programs and optimization plans so that, in addition to reducing energy consumption, the refinery’s productivity continuously increases.” He pointed to the gas phase separation project as an example of these measures and added: “The implementation of this project was carried out with the aim of resolving the problems of receiving gas from the Kangan basin and facilitating the receipt of more gas from South Pars. In addition to increasing the amount of feed received, this measure has reduced the consumption of chemicals and steam and ultimately resulted in significant savings in energy consumption.” Complete replacement of water transmission lines The operations manager of the Fajr Jam refinery emphasized the challenges related to the old underground water transmission pipelines and fire lines at the operation site: “The metal water pipelines are more than 35 years old and have caused numerous leaks due to corrosion and wear, which caused the waste of water resources. In the past three years, the project of completely replacing these lines has been on the agenda and has been defined in five phases.
