The need for cooperation between all sectors to optimize consumption and invest in increasing gas production
According to Energy Press, Saeed Tavakoli stated on Friday evening (December 13) in a special news talk show that Iran has the world’s second-largest gas reserves: “We should not think that because we have reserves, we should not face imbalances, because in order to increase the amount of production and extraction from identified resources and reservoirs, large investments must be made.” He pointed out that since the beginning of the 14th government’s activities, many records have been recorded in the field of oil and gas production, but due to non-observance of the consumption pattern and suboptimal consumption, these achievements are not seen, and he added: “Even despite the increase in production, if we have the same consumption trend, we will still face imbalances and with this crude burning, we will betray the future and progress of the country.” The Deputy Minister of Petroleum stated that other countries do not deal with energy imbalances by increasing production alone, and said: “The majority of our country’s energy portfolio, nearly 72 percent, is gas, which is not even observed in Russia, which has the largest gas reserves.” Allocating the most gas produced to power plants and industry throughout the year. Tavakoli pointed out that currently 85 percent of the fuel portfolio of power plants is gas, and added: “The rest of the fuel portfolio of power plants is also mainly supplied by liquid fuel, namely oil and gas, while nuclear energy and renewable resources are used much more in the world. There is no power plant fuel portfolio in the world that is 85 percent natural gas and 15 percent liquid fuel.” Stating that the largest amount of gas produced throughout the year is allocated to power plants and industry, he said: During the year, 34 percent is allocated to power plant fuel, 34 percent to industry, 25 percent to the domestic sector, 3 percent to transportation, and 4 percent to other issues.
The Deputy Minister of Oil pointed out that at the peak of the cold season, the gas network balance is disrupted due to high consumption by domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers, and this amount of gas is allocated to domestic consumers, and continued: Due to the change in the gas consumption pattern during the cold season, power plants must turn to liquid and alternative fuels to meet their needs.
Tavakoli, pointing out that in the winter arrangement, nearly 855 million cubic meters of gas are delivered to the national gas network daily in the winter, stated: “During peak consumption, of this amount, nearly 690 and even 700 million cubic meters, which is expected to be reached next week, meaning 82 percent of the gas delivered to the network is consumed in the household, commercial, and small industrial sectors.”
