Trump will push the maximum pressure campaign against Iran’s oil industry
The professor of political science and economics at Williams College said that as far as Iran is concerned, we should not be too happy about the change of approach by the new Trump administration and it seems that he not only intends to continue the previous sanctions but also to intensify them.

According to the exclusive report of Energy Press, the re-election of “Donald Trump” as the President of the United States shocked many around the world. Despite previous optimistic predictions, the White House will once again host an extremist president whose policies based on pressure on competitors and tension will have many effects on the economy, especially in the energy sector. In this regard, Energy Press had a conversation with the professor of political science and economics of Williams College.
“James Mahon” is a professor of political science and economics at Williams College in the United States. His studies and writings include political economy, comparative politics and foreign relations.
What follows is the detailed interview of Energy Press with this university professor focusing on Donald Trump’s policies in the field of energy:
Donald Trump, the candidate of the Republican Party, was able to win the recent US presidential elections. Many have considered this issue as an effective victory for major energy companies in the world, including the United States. What is your interpretation of this issue?
Former President Donald Trump’s election victory has created excitement among the fossil fuel and mining industries. The reason is that they anticipate a favorable regulatory environment for the fossil sector in his future administration. Meanwhile, the president-elect’s Republican allies see a new opportunity for long-stalled anti-green policies.
Trump, who withdrew from the Paris climate agreement and canceled numerous energy and environmental regulations during his first term, has promised to take a similar approach in his second term. He has also pledged to increase domestic oil and gas production, including by opening up new land for drilling. He also discredited all types of renewable energy such as wind and sun and demanded an end to “stupid wind energy subsidies”.
Considering these issues, it can be concluded that Trump’s energy policy is more in favor of the owners of fossil energy related industries, and this means that we should see a large turn in the United States’ energy policies. The oil and gas industry supported his campaign and bought more than $14 million for his re-election bid. In short, in the wake of Trump’s victory, the oil industry is hoping that he will follow through on his promises and roll back regulations put in place by the Biden administration.
In the previous period, Trump imposed sanctions against Iran’s oil industry. Many believe that he will continue this path more strongly in the new period. Also, his choices for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other key positions show that he does not intend to take a different course in his new term as president. What is your analysis of Trump’s plan to impose sanctions on Iran’s energy sector?
As far as Iran is concerned, we should not be too happy about the change of approach by the new Trump administration. It seems that he not only intends to continue the previous sanctions but also to intensify them. Recently, informed sources reported that the new Trump administration will increase the pressure on Iran’s oil sector, and this is something that a number of officials of his previous administration have also emphasized. Therefore, in my opinion, the possibility of intensifying sanctions against Iran in the new Trump administration is very strong. As you mentioned yourself, Trump’s foreign policy choices show that he has no intention of retreating from his previous positions.
