What percentage of Iran’s power plants burn fuel oil?
According to Energy Press, the information base of the Ministry of Energy, every year and with the arrival of the cold season, the issue of air pollution and the sources effective in this phenomenon are brought to the attention of the public, and on the other hand, the lack of natural gas due to the increase in consumption. This energy in the domestic sector makes power plants face the challenge of winter fuel supply.
The challenge and limitation that many imagine forces the Ministry of Energy to switch to fuel oil instead of gas in most power plants, but what is happening in the real world does not confirm such an issue.
According to the announcement of the senior managers of the country’s electricity industry, no fuel oil is used for power supply in Tehran. Also, there are only 16 heating power plants in the whole country, and the rest of the power plants are gas and combined cycle, which basically cannot use fuel oil. Among these 16 power plants, the fuel tank of two power plants, Ba’ath and Isfahan, have been sealed for years and are out of reach, so only 14 power plants in the country can use fuel oil, which is a low figure compared to 127 other power plants and includes only 10% of power plants.
Further explanation that the existing power plants in Tehran province including Tarasht, Baath and Ray power plants all use gas fuel and other power plants including Shohada Pakdasht and Parand cannot use fuel oil due to the nature of the combined cycle.
The important thing about the Tarasht power plant is that this power plant has not housed any diesel fuel for more than 40 years and even the diesel-burning part of this power plant has turned into a football field. In addition, this power plant goes out of operation every year and in the cold seasons due to the drop in gas pressure and the location of the power plant in an urban area.
The fuel oil unit of Baath power plant has been completely sealed for many years due to environmental restrictions and this power plant uses natural gas. With the explanation that the gas consumption of Baath power plant is approximately one million and 600 cubic meters per day and whenever the gas pressure drops, the production decreases and no second fuel is used in this power plant.
Pakdasht Martyrs Power Plant, which is considered the largest combined cycle power plant, has been in operation since 2002 and has been in operation in two phases, first the gas phase and the second phase as a combined cycle. Regarding the fuel consumed by this power plant, it should be said that the main fuel of this power plant is natural gas according to the manufacturer’s documents, and diesel fuel is used as a second and auxiliary fuel if needed.
Also, Parand power plant, which is one of the gas power plants in Tehran province with a production capacity of 1526 megawatts, uses gas fuel to produce electricity, and diesel fuel is not used in this power plant either.
Finally, Ray power plant is also known as one of the oldest power plants, its production units are designed in such a way that they cannot use diesel fuel in any way, the first and main fuel of this power plant is natural gas and the only alternative fuel in this power plant is liquid diesel fuel. In case of non-allocation of gas quota, this complex will use alternative fuel, i.e. diesel, to supply the electricity required by the network. At the same time, due to the fact that the use of liquid diesel fuel will have more destructive effects on the turbine equipment, and it is never a consumption priority.
