What is the exact number of Iran’s missing gas?
The number of Iran's missing gas is so large that it can cover a part of the country's gas imbalance and deficit.

According to the exclusive report of Energy Press, the amount of lost gas or the same gas that is fueled and destroyed in the country’s national network is not known precisely.
Although this number is not known due to the lack of up-to-date and high-precision tools, some estimates are made. Dr. Vahid Mohebi, a faculty member of Sanat Naft University, says about this: “The number of missing gas in our country is between 6 and 10%, which is much more compared to the missing gas in developed countries. . Those countries have kept this number at one and two percent.”
However, experts do not agree with each other about the amount of missing gas. Even though Hossein Mirafazli, an energy expert, declares this number to be 4%: “The estimated number is 4%. Of course, we should also pay attention to the fact that among all the problems in the way of household gas wastage in Iran, compared to the cold countries of the world, there are many problems that should be solved by consumption management.
Natural gas currently accounts for about 70% of the country’s energy share. Currently, all the gas delivered to the refineries, after purification and sweetening, is transferred through national lines to the pressure reduction facilities at the entrance of the cities or villages and finally reaches the consumption of different sectors.
In this existing production, transmission and distribution network, due to the inaccuracy of natural gas measurement conditions, it is not possible to accurately calculate the energy lost in pipelines, pressure boosting and reduction stations, gas leaks and even gas thefts. Based on this, in order to deal with gas violations, the government has put heavy fines, temporary cut-off of gas from delinquent customers, and even encouraging good customers, but none of these methods have so far led to a reduction in gas violations.
