92% progress in South Pars platform overhaul; complete preparation for winter 2025

According to Energy Press, the South Pars gas field, as the world’s largest shared gas field, plays a strategic role in the country’s energy supply and economic development. This field, which is shared between Iran and Qatar in the Persian Gulf, contains more than half of the country’s natural gas reserves and has a significant share in the daily production of gas, gas condensate, and feedstock for petrochemical units. The development of the various phases of this field, in addition to meeting domestic needs, has also provided a platform for exports and sustainable foreign exchange for the country.
South Pars is not only a symbol of the technical and managerial power of Iran’s oil and gas industry, but is also considered the driving force of the national economy in the energy sector. The stable and safe operation of the offshore platforms and facilities of this field has a direct impact on the continuity of gas supply in cold seasons, power generation, and downstream industries. Therefore, maintaining operational readiness and improving the efficiency of these platforms has always been a top priority for Pars Oil and Gas Company and the Ministry of Oil.
The overhaul of the South Pars gas platforms is one of the most important planned activities in the field of offshore facility operation and maintenance. This operation is carried out with the aim of ensuring production stability, increasing safety factor and reducing the failure rate of critical equipment. Due to the harsh environmental conditions of the Persian Gulf and high operational pressures, the equipment installed on the platforms requires periodic monitoring, reconstruction and replacement to prevent production stoppages and industrial accidents.
The annual overhaul of the South Pars platforms includes a set of technical measures such as inspecting pipelines, replacing valves and compressors, repairing control systems, rebuilding turbines and conducting performance tests. These activities are usually carried out in limited time periods and with careful planning to have minimal impact on the flow of gas production.
The importance of this operation is doubled when we know that the stability of production from the South Pars platforms directly affects the country’s gas supply during peak consumption seasons. In addition to increasing the useful life of the equipment, the successful implementation of the overhaul operation will reduce long-term maintenance costs, improve employee safety, and ensure the continuation of sustainable energy production at the national level.
92 percent progress, 100 percent by the end of October
Hadi Fakhrzadeh, Head of Maintenance, Production Operations Management, Pars Oil and Gas Company, pointed out that out of a total of 39 active platforms in South Pars, 35 platforms were covered by major repairs and more than 92 percent progress has been achieved so far, and stated: “With the completion of the remaining platform, we will reach 100 percent coverage by the end of October.”
He added: “On three offshore platforms, six 32-inch valves weighing approximately 18 tons were replaced, and the emergency power systems of two platforms SPD-7 and SPD-8 were replaced with domestically manufactured equipment. Also, in the pipeline sector, areas with reduced thickness were identified, repaired, and strengthened.
The head of maintenance, production and operations management of Pars Oil and Gas Company, stated that the country faced extraordinary conditions in the midst of the implementation of the platform overhauls, and said: “The outbreak of the 12-day war at the same time as the overhaul activities did not cause any disruption to the work process. With unremitting efforts, full compliance with safety instructions, and careful management, colleagues were able to continue the repairs without the slightest interruption or damage and ensure stable gas production for the winter. This success is an example of the commitment and dedication of the employees in the most difficult operating conditions.”
