74% of Iran’s energy portfolio depends on gas

According to Energy Press, citing the National Iranian Gas Company, Saeed Tavakoli emphasized in an interview with Radio Eqtesad on Tuesday (September 15) about the high dependence of the country’s energy portfolio on gas: About 73 to 74 percent of the country’s energy portfolio depends on natural gas. Nowhere in the world is such a share of gas seen in the energy portfolio, approximately 80 to 83 percent of the country’s power plants are fueled by gas, while the global average is about 20 to 23 percent. These figures show that our energy portfolio does not have sufficient diversity, and this has made gas the country’s largest energy supplier. Stating that high dependence has its own threats and risks, because in the event of instability in gas supply, a large part of the country’s consumers are affected, he added: “In addition to efforts to increase production, serious attention should also be paid to diversifying the energy portfolio on the consumption side.” The use of renewable energies, the use of nuclear power plant capacity and alternative fuels, and increasing the efficiency of power plants are among the axes of this change.
China; One of the best models in diversifying the energy portfolio
The Deputy Minister of Oil for Gas Affairs pointed out that China, for example, is one of the best models in diversifying the energy portfolio and supplies about 50 to 60 percent of its fuel from coal, and continued: China uses this fuel in places where it is possible to produce power and where strict environmental controls are carried out so that the emission of pollutants does not affect the air.
Regarding the solutions to change the country’s energy portfolio, Tavakoli stated: On average, more than 36 to 37 percent of the country’s produced gas is allocated annually to industries, and approximately the same amount is consumed in power plants. The domestic sector accounts for about 25 percent, and the rest is related to transportation and other sectors. If we can reduce the dependence of power plants on gas, by increasing power plant efficiency, developing renewable energies, and increasing the efficiency of industrial equipment, we can gradually reduce the dependence of the country’s energy portfolio.
